What Does Your Team’s Haka Look Like?

What about a refreshing break?

Sit down, lay back and relax. Feeling comfortable? Now push play. Watch and enjoy !

Now go through the following questions, taking a moment to answer them for yourself, each in turn :

How did you like this team?

What comments, words or images came to your mind as you were watching?

Are you ready for more?

Then again sit down, lay back and relax. Feeling comfortable? Go ahead, push play!

And now? How did you feel as you were watching? What did you like about the contrast between the two videos?

Think a bit about these questions.

Let ideas and images come to your mind…

And when you feel ready – switch to your own team.

How is your team’s Haka?

Finally, review these questions :

* How aligned is your team?

* How skilled are the team members?

* How committed and engaged are they?

* If there was one thing you could do to improve your team’s haka, what would you chose?

I wish you a great adventure with your team!

I watched the second movie already 5-6 times and it looks very serious – i wouldn’t like to fight with these guys :-) ))

      Yes, very serious, isn’t it?
      Even fascinating…

As I was preparing this post, I discovered that there are actually many different types of hakas – it’s always about getting ready for something, but it could help people to get ready for a fight, for a religious ceremony…

In this particular case, this haka was composed specifically for that team, to help them awaken and gather all their strength, their vital energy and their self-confidence.
      Pretty convincing, isn’t it?
      :)

take a loot at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kA9z5bvnyM – it’s not very serious, but worth to see =)))) sometimes there is a creative solution against the strongest teams =))

    • Fabienne says:

      Hum… interesting ;)

But don’t worry – I can professionally rebounce even on that one!

On the positive side, indeed, it’s a pretty creative answer.
What have these guys done to surprise us and make us laugh?
They’ve taken the innovation game one step further.
When the NZ teams introduced their Haka ritual, it was an innovation of its own: they staid within specific parameters (an introductory ritual before starting a game) but brought a new one (leveraging a native tradition which includes words and choreography).
What this (fictitious) Scot team is doing is similar: they stay within specific parameters (an introductory ritual before starting a game) but they surprise us because they get rid of what we expect will follow next, e.g. the choreography and words (and most probably the music, since most spectators would naturally expect a backpipe to appear right away after they see a scottish kilt!).

However on the challenging side, I’d say two things: first it takes us away from the meaning of the Haka as it was composed in its most recent version which, unlike it seems to most unaware spectators, is not about “I’m going to kill you and you better watch out!” but is about gathering your strength and energy for the game (you can check out this explanation here : http://youtu.be/Doh-ST1jrPQ).

And second… they could do better ;) they’ve indeed, as explained above, really just changed one element to create some sense of surprise. But all the rest is the same: going back to the most traditional, standard definition of male strength… Could they really not be more creative than that?

In any case, thanks for the good laugh :)
