Space — A Creativity Booster

It’s hard to experience creativity

when every single minute of your agenda’s been planned and filled

Sometimes, all you need to be creative is to make space for it. It’s about opening up a space where you’re not planning, controlling or guiding any of your thoughts and actions. Quite a luxury for many of us who live under pressure, when there is so much that needs to get done and the only solution seems to be about hurrying even more!

If you’d like to boost your creativity in the coming days, make this simple experience. Take your agenda, and challenge yourself to remove activities from it. Your goal might be as modest and practical as freeing up one whole hour in a day.

Try and free one whole hour

on a specific day

Make sure you will not be interrupted during that one hour – preferably, go to some place where people won’t find you and turn off your phone. Then spend this one hour in such a way that you won’t have to make any decisions or focus your thoughts on something specific – for example, go for a slow walk in a nice parc. Do not go for a fast walk in an overcrowded part of town where you’d have to pay attention to your fellow pedestrians, unexpected bikes or careless car drivers. Alternatively, go and sit somewhere with a beautiful view and let your thoughts wander.

And then – just let things happen…

If you notice that you start thinking intently, don’t worry. Just take a breathe, and let it go. Relax, enjoy the moment, and you’ll be surprised to experience that some really interesting and creative ideas might surface!
